Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, during a joint press conference with Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, emphasized Georgia as an important bilateral and development partner. She stressed that both nations need to strengthen resilience in the face of Russian aggression and disinformation.
Meinl-Reisinger reaffirmed Austria’s support for Georgia’s territorial integrity, focusing on the occupied breakaway regions. However, she expressed concern over Georgia’s EU accession process, citing regressions in justice, human rights, and the rule of law. She condemned the violence against peaceful protesters and media and highlighted the EU’s suspension of financial assistance to Georgia.
While acknowledging setbacks, Meinl-Reisinger stressed the importance of dialogue, particularly with civil society and political opposition, and reaffirmed Austria’s continued support for the Georgian people’s European aspirations. She urged Georgia to reverse its course on EU accession, noting the majority of the Georgian population supports EU membership.
The Austrian FM emphasized the need for open communication, citing Vienna’s role as a diplomatic hub and Austria’s readiness to support Georgia’s EU path if the government adjusts its approach.
