
Georgian Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Davit Songhulashvili, met with John Barker, Secretary General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), to discuss the development of Georgia's viticulture and winemaking sector. The meeting focused on enhancing global awareness of Georgian wine and expanding its market reach.
Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency, highlighted Barker's significant influence in the wine industry, noting that his support has often been crucial for pivotal decisions. Mekhuzla emphasized that the OIV's activities, including setting international standards and promoting sustainable practices, play a vital role in elevating the reputation of Georgian wine.
During his visit, Barker toured wine cellars in Kartli and Imereti, experiencing firsthand the traditional and modern aspects of Georgian winemaking. He also visited the Jighaura Perennial Crops Research and Demonstration Base, the Georgian Agrarian University, and the Georgian National Museum, furthering his understanding of Georgia's rich viticultural heritage.
Established in 1924, the OIV is an intergovernmental organization comprising 51 member countries, including Georgia. The OIV sets global standards for the vine and wine sector and assists member countries in developing their viticulture and winemaking industries.
This visit underscores the ongoing collaboration between Georgia and the OIV, aiming to bolster the country's position in the global wine industry.
