During his recent visit to Georgia, John Barker, Director General of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), toured the Jighaura Experimental Base of the Agricultural Research Center. He was welcomed by Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Center, who provided an overview of the ongoing efforts to preserve Georgia’s grapevine genetic resources and promote the development of viticulture and winemaking.
“We discussed in detail the Center’s work on conserving plant genetic resources and raising awareness of Georgian grape varieties. This visit marks another important step toward future cooperation,” said Ujmajuridze.
Barker explored the vineyard collections at the Jighaura base, examined restored Georgian grape varieties, and sampled wines made from rare indigenous grapes.
“Georgia is one of the world’s most significant centers of grapevine genetic diversity. This legacy is globally unique. I’m pleased to see that it is not only being carefully preserved but is also actively advancing. The Center’s work in researching, restoring, and conserving grapevine varieties is of great importance both nationally and internationally,” Barker noted.
The visit also included discussions on strategies to boost global awareness of Georgian wine and expand scientific collaboration.
Also in attendance were Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency, and key researchers from the Agricultural Research Center.
This marks Barker’s second visit to the Jighaura Experimental Base - his first was in 2010, during the 33rd Congress of the International Organization of Vine and Wine.
