As the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia reports, on July 25-26, the sixth round of the negotiations on the draft Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) between Georgia and Canada was held in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The main negotiator from the Georgian side was the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Genadi Arveladze. Representatives of the Ministry of Economy, Justice, Foreign Affairs and Finance also participated in the group of negotiators from the side of Georgia.
According to Deputy Minister Genadi Arveladze, the investment agreement will encourage entrepreneurial initiatives and stimulate the free movement of private capital, which, in turn, will contribute to the development of economic cooperation between the parties and the effective use of economic resources. As Genadi Arveladze noted, the draft provisions of the mentioned agreement include the mechanisms of protection of investments and investors, in case of disputes between the parties, the ways of solving them, which is an important prerequisite for the development of investment activities between the parties.
As part of the visit, the Deputy Minister also held a bilateral meeting with Robert Sinclair, Acting Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. Prospects for deepening cooperation between Georgia and Canada in the following areas [trade and investments, energy, mineral extraction and processing, transport, Georgia-EU relations and others] were discussed at the meeting. Attention was also paid to the development of the transport and logistics infrastructure of Georgia, which would contribute to the attraction of additional cargo flow to the so-called middle transport corridor; a great interest was expressed in the strategic "Black Sea submarine cable" project for the energy of Georgia, which is important for the country's energy security and will connect the energy network of Georgia and the European Union.
