Georgia’s Foreign Minister, Maka Botchorishvili, asserted that Georgia’s strong economic performance contrasts sharply with Moldova’s record-high foreign debt, making it “very difficult to hide the truth.”
Her comments followed reports in Moldovan media claiming that Moldova’s total national debt has reached an all-time high of 128.649 billion lei. She was also asked about remarks from the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, who said that Ukraine and Moldova are “much further ahead than Georgia” on the EU enlargement path.
Botchorishvili argued that such assessments damage the EU’s own credibility.
“Statements like the one made by the EU Ambassador—this one and others—serve only one purpose: they cast a shadow over the European Union’s credibility,” she said. “It is impossible to conceal the reality around us. Georgia is demonstrating historically impressive economic growth, while Moldova’s foreign debt stands at a historic high. The truth is difficult to hide.”
She added that the public can clearly observe how Georgia is developing compared to others.
“In these circumstances, claiming that Moldova and Ukraine are surpassing Georgia by any indicator becomes absurd. Such statements undermine only the credibility of those who make them,” Botchorishvili said.
