Mikheil Sarjveladze, Georgia’s Minister of IDPs from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health, and Social Protection, is participating in the Abu Dhabi Global Health Week, which commenced with remarks from Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.
During a panel discussion at the conference, Sarjveladze addressed the topic of health equity, emphasizing that healthcare policy and reforms in Georgia are guided by this principle.
“In January 2025, Georgia was recognized by the World Health Organization as a malaria-free country. This achievement is the culmination of many years of dedicated effort and demonstrates what can be accomplished when equity is integrated into evidence-based strategies and global cooperation,” stated Mikheil Sarjveladze.
He highlighted that one of the primary priorities for achieving healthcare equity is ensuring financial security. Sarjveladze elaborated on various reforms implemented in this regard, including the Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) financing model for medical institutions, the establishment of reference prices for medications and oncology treatments, and the elimination of annual spending limits.
“The future of healthcare equity hinges on a collective vision and responsibility shared among governments, multilateral institutions, and societies. Georgia is committed to this path, and we extend our gratitude to our partners—WHO, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and others—for joining us on this journey,” the Minister of Health affirmed.
The event will also feature Giorgi Janjgava, Georgia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Arab Emirates.
As part of Global Health Week, Mikheil Sarjveladze is set to discuss the potential of artificial intelligence in the healthcare system. He is also scheduled to meet with Mansour Al Mansouri, the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Health and the conference chair.
