At the official opening of the Georgian Consulate General in Milan, Mayor Giuseppe Sala praised the Georgian community in Italy for its dynamic contribution to the city’s cultural and social fabric. He underscored Milan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Georgia across multiple sectors.
“Your representation has played a vital role for quite some time. Georgia boasts a large, active diaspora in Italy—an important community that significantly contributes to Milan’s vibrant life. This diaspora helps us embody the spirit of modern Milan,” Sala stated.
The ceremony was also attended by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, marking a milestone in Georgia–Italy relations.
In his speech, Mayor Sala touched on the broader significance of the partnership between Milan and Georgian cities, particularly Tbilisi. He noted that both cities have populations of around 1.4 million and emphasized Milan’s importance as an economic hub for Georgia.
“Mr Prime Minister, this city has demonstrated both the strengths and challenges typical of all urban centres. While Milan faces the complexities of the modern world, solutions must be pursued in multiple directions. Progress is essential because advancements often begin at the city level and then extend to the national stage,” he remarked.
Sala expressed enthusiasm about expanding cooperation beyond Tbilisi to include other Georgian municipalities, especially in strategic sectors like port infrastructure.
“I encourage you to consider the potential of port cities; we have incomparable maritime hubs that can mutually strengthen each other and foster development.”
Addressing the geopolitical context, Sala affirmed Italy’s solidarity with Georgia and its European aspirations.
“Europe is watching Georgia with close attention and genuine care. We are always committed to standing in solidarity with you. Our friendship and shared vision for cooperation are heartfelt and sincere. It is a great honour for us.”
The Mayor concluded by expressing confidence in Milan’s role—and that of the Lombardy Region—in building a meaningful and lasting partnership with Georgia.
