"The complacency of the peoples of Europe and the cowardice of those in power can, all of a sudden, become a source of additional tension for us. The first month of the large-scale war proves that it is is impossible to reach an agreement with the EU in a kind way. Just talking about the lifeless bodies of children lying on the streets or the most vulnerable categories of millions of refugees and aggressors, who are putting even greater demands on you, is not enough argument to make an important decision. The people, whom the EU's fate depends on, still cannot realize their historical role and responsibility before Europe. And if this is not possible in good faith, then we should resort to other methods; for example, imagine the similar situation we all find ourselves in after five years, if we do not respond to the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU here and right now. Sounds like a threat? Why not…
This decision will not end the war - Europe is really less contributing here, but, in the long run, Ukraine's EU membership would be a reasonable step. This in no case means the amount of compensation for the horrors of war. Historically, this is a powerful symbolic act that will expand and strengthen Europe, make it more prosperous and secure, even if it looks different from today's point of view. This will be a signal to the Ukrainians that they will join the European Union soon and will not be subject to review. If there is a political will to do so, we should not say that "Ukraine is not ready."
Yes, of course, Ukraine is not ready - the war is going on there. But let's be frank: judging by the EU criteria, it [Ukraine] will not be ready in five years, even if the war ends tomorrow, the aggressor returns home and we start rebuilding Ukraine. It will not be so efficiently prepared for a long time as the Brussels bureaucracy demands. The courage of Europe's political elite is needed “to overstep” the bureaucracy in the name of a grand plan.
Within a month, not a single high-ranking politician from old Europe has appeared to risk arriving in Kyiv for 48 hours, taking a selfie with President Zelensky on Maidan and saying, "Ukraine is Europe." If Ukraine does not join the EU today, in the future it may not be able to meet our ideas and aspirations. We will get a state that feels completely justly insulted itself and be angry not only with Russia, but most of all those who have turned a blind eye and remained an indifferent observer. We will get a large country equipped with the latest technologies, which may go beyond the values and lose its focus.
Conflicts between the former friends are not ruled out. Then will we be able to reprimand Ukraine? It is hard to criticize people, who have fought for you - you turn out to be an idiot yourself then. This process will take many years and we will still have to adapt to it. So it's better not to let that happen at all.
I will voice another grotesque idea. The whole world is seriously debating what should be done to make Putin save his face. But, no one is considering the measures to be taken in the same case for Zelensky. War is exhausting, and support from the existing huge masses will not last forever. Let the EU membership be the prey to the head of state himself, who is the representative of my generation, since his possible nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize seems to be only a minor award. Zelensky will put it up for sale just as his predecessor, Dmitry Muratov, did," - Meelis Kubits wrote.
