The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has officially recognized seafarers’ certificates issued by the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency, paving the way for Georgian maritime professionals to work on vessels under the Luxembourg flag.
According to the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency, approximately 200 ships are currently registered under Luxembourg’s maritime registry. This recognition makes Luxembourg the 20th EU member state to accept Georgian seafarers’ qualifications, significantly expanding employment opportunities across Europe.
“This is an important step in ensuring high guarantees of social protection for Georgian seafarers,” said Ivane Abashidze, Director of the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency. He emphasized that recent reforms—such as the ratification of the International Maritime Labor Convention and the adoption of the Law of Georgia on Seafarers' Labor—have strengthened the legal and social protections for Georgian seafarers and improved their competitiveness in the global job market.
To date, 75 countries (20 EU and 55 non-EU states) officially recognize Georgian seafarers’ certificates. The Maritime Transport Agency stated it will continue working with international partners to further increase global recognition of Georgian maritime qualifications.
