Chair of the EU Integration Committee, Levan Makhashvili, commented on the recent controversy involving opposition figures, stating that while it is difficult to witness Georgian citizens taking such actions, a legal response is essential for the country’s future.
“It is difficult for us as human beings to see Georgian citizens taking such steps, but for the better future of the country, it is necessary for the process to have a legal assessment,” Makhashvili said.
According to him, opposition politicians have for years been engaged in activities contrary to Georgia’s national interests.
“What the Prosecutor’s Office is doing is a legal assessment of the processes that society witnessed live over the past year. As for the recently released recordings—if the information is authentic—it further confirms what the Prosecutor’s Office has been investigating. This is nothing new; for years, these individuals have been observed engaging in actions against Georgia’s national interests. Everything is clear and should be given a legal assessment, however hard it may be for anyone,” he stated.
The remarks follow the broadcast by Imedi TV of a recording allegedly featuring Droa party leader Elene Khoshtaria and Girchi–More Freedom leader Zurab Japaridze, in which they purportedly discuss instructions received from foreign sources, including military-related information.
