“A Lebanese company plans to open a tobacco factory in Georgia,” - according to the report submitted to the Parliament by the Georgian government. Part of the document is about attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to the country and it states that the leading exporter of the Lebanese tobacco products plans to build a new plant in Georgia. Reportedly, the new enterprise will be mainly focused on exports to the EU.
"A Lebanese company, which exports tobacco products to 90 countries around the world, has decided to open a new enterprise in Georgia, particularly, in Adjara. 72 different products will be produced in Georgia and will be mainly exported to the European countries. The company will initially employ about 50 people,” - the government report said.
The document does not mention the name of the investor company. The amount of the investment is not specified either. Most likely, it refers to the company Régie Libanaise des Tabacs et Tombacs (RLTT), which is a state-owned company based in Lebanon for the production of cigarettes and import and export of tobacco. It currently accounts for more than half of all cigarette sales in the Lebanese market.
