Tomato production has decreased in Georgia. According to the data of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), the country produced 69.5 tons of products in 2020, and in 2021 - 56.8 tons.
In terms of production, Shida Kartli ranks 1st, where 27.8 tons of tomatoes were produced, followed by Kvemo Kartli - 13.4 tons, Imereti - 5 tons, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti - 3.9 tons, Imereti - 3 tons, while the remaining 3.7 tons are distributed to other regions.
At the same time, experts predict a decline in tomato production globally. As East fruit writes, the reason for this is sowing tomato seeds in open ground, which leads to the crop vulnerability to the climate change. Experts say water shortages, rising temperatures and, consequently, declining crops will hit southern California and Italy hardest.
As the tomato production declines, both imports and domestic exports downturn. According to Geostat, 12,114 tons (with the revenue of $ 4.203 million) of tomatoes were imported to Georgia in January-May this year, compared to 13,083 tons (with the revenue of $ 3.913 million) in the same period of 2021.
The countries, where Georgia bought tomatoes in January-May 2022, are given below:
Turkey - 11,926 tons (4,102 million USD);
Azerbaijan - 86.7 tons (35.4 thousand USD);
Iran - 63.2 tons (22.7 thousand USD);
Egypt - 19 tons (24.2 thousand USD);
Turkmenistan - 19 tons (18 thousand USD);
The Netherlands -0.3 tons (0.8 thousand USD).
Local (locally produced product) exports, compared to last year, decreased significantly. It should be noted that Russia, Armenia and Belarus are among the top three exporters.
The countries, where tomatoes (locally produced) were exported from Georgia in January-May 2022, are given below:
