On November 30, 2022, a meeting was held with the Director of the Free Trade Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea, regarding the free trade agreement in Seoul, the capital of Korea. Within the framework of the mentioned meeting, on November 30 of this year, the joint declaration of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea was signed on the completion of the feasibility study of the free trade agreement between Georgia and the Republic of Korea. The Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Genadi Arveladze signed the joint declaration from the side of Georgia.
According to the findings and recommendations of the Joint Feasibility Study, the Korea-Georgia Free Trade Agreement is feasible and will bring significant benefits to both Georgia and Korea. The mentioned agreement will open access for Georgian export products to the 50 million consumer market with high purchasing power through the free trade regime. In addition, the free trade agreement between Georgia and the Republic of Korea will be a catalyst for strengthening trade and economic relations between the two countries. The free trade agreement between Georgia and the Republic of Korea will not only facilitate the expansion of trade and investment, but also provide a comprehensive institutional framework for a wide range of bilateral cooperation.
Following the recommendations, negotiations on a free trade agreement, within the scope of the possibility and taking into account the mutual benefits of the two countries, should be held both on trade in goods and services, as well as on a wide range of trade-related measures, such as trade facilitation, customs, trade defense measures, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, non-tariff measures, intellectual property rights, etc.
In accordance with the recommendations of the study, the parties agreed to implement relevant internal state procedures as soon as possible to start negotiations on a free trade agreement, the first round of which is planned to be held in 2023.
At the meeting with the Director of the Free Trade Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea, the parties also discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, production, tourism, transport and logistics.
