Former Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has announced that preparations are in progress for the country’s Independence Day celebrations on May 26. As part of the mobilization, the Resistance Platform—a civic initiative opposing the current government—has formed a commission that is open to “all resistance forces.”
In her latest remarks, Zourabichvili sharply criticized recent government crackdowns, describing them as signs of a regime in crisis. “Searches and raids are inconceivable in a normal country, but we have not considered ourselves a normal country for a long time,” she said. “The regime is clearly struggling to control the situation and is driven by the instinct to preserve itself at all costs.”
Zourabichvili argued that repression is failing to stifle public dissent, pointing to growing instability within the ruling elite. “People are leaving or distancing themselves from the front lines. Even some close to the regime are stepping back. These are the tremors that signal an impending collapse.”
She also spoke in support of targeted sanctions, saying they have proven particularly effective against high-ranking officials with accumulated wealth. “Sanctions significantly impact those isolated from global systems, unable to access or use their assets. We will keep the public informed with detailed updates on these matters,” she concluded.
