
Georgia produced 2.1 thousand tons of sunflowers in 2021, which is 0.2 thousand tons more than the volume reported last year, but less than in 2019-2018. More specifically, in 2020 the country produced 1.9 thousand tons of sunflowers, in 2019 - 2.6 thousand tons, and in 2018 - 3 thousand tons.
According to the document published by the Georgian National Statistics Office, in 2021 the sown areas of sunflowers amounted to 3 thousand hectares. Crops increased by 500 hectares compared to those last year. In 2020, there were only 2.5 thousand hectares of sunflower sown areas in Georgia, and 3 thousand - in 2021.
The document says the average yield per hectare last year included 0.7 thousand tons, which is less indicator than in previous years. In 2021, farmers produced 0.8 thousand tons of sunflowers per hectare, and 1.1 thousand tons - in 2019.
Despite the meager production, in 2021 the import rate of sunflowers in the country also decreased and amounted to 4,668 tons, while in the pandemic 2020 - 6,846 tons of sunflowers were imported to Georgia.
Based on the 2021 data, the main importer of sunflowers in Georgia was Ukraine - 84.2%, while the share of Russian products was about 11%. More specifically, in 2021, Georgia imported a total of 4,668 tons of sunflowers worth $ 4.180 million, out of which 3,932 tons were imported from Ukraine, worth $ 3.424 million, and 529.9 tons, worth $ 327.3 thousand - from Russia.
Currently, both countries are banned from exporting sunflower seeds - Russia until August 31, and Ukraine - until December 31.
