In August 2022, the import of grapes in Georgia reached a record level. In just one month, the country bought 112 tons of fresh grapes worth of $104.6 thousand. This is almost 2.5 times higher than the pre-pandemic rate. In August 2019, the country bought 48.6 tons of grapes worth of $41.58 thousand.
In addition to 2019, the import of grapes into Georgia in August broke all 13-year records. To be informed, the data of the Georgian National Statistics Office (GEOSTAT) on the volume of strawberries bought by Georgia have been available on the external trade portal of the National Statistics Office since 2009. In August 2009, the country bought 4.5 tons of grapes worth of $7.06 thousand.
According to the GEOSTAT data, 1,171 tons of grapes worth of $1,086 million were imported into Georgia in January-August 2022. As for the importing countries, in August 2022, Georgia bought grapes from three countries of the world:
Turkey - $89.9 thousand (99.78 tons)
Armenia - $10.2 thousand (11.51 tons)
The Netherlands - $4.47 thousand (1.48 tons)
As EastFruit analysts write, the high demand for foreign table grapes is due to two factors. This season, the supply of table grapes to the local market was low, which certainly stimulated imports. Another reason is the dynamically growing demand from retail stores.
The peak period of import of table grapes in Georgia falls on the fourth quarter of the year. Therefore, it is not excluded that the import of grapes to the country will break another record in the coming months.
