The Secretary-General of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, stated that Georgia’s recent progress in the maritime sector is fully in line with the IMO’s strategic objectives. His remarks followed a meeting with Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, the ministry reported.
Dominguez described the discussion as highly productive and commended Georgia’s active engagement within the IMO.
“We discussed not only the continued support that the International Maritime Organization will provide to Georgia as an active member, but also the progress the country has made in its maritime sector, which is fully consistent with our organization’s objectives,” he noted.
The meeting covered Georgia’s successful involvement in various IMO-led projects, ongoing sectoral reforms, and emerging trends in maritime transport. The sides also reviewed major infrastructure initiatives aimed at solidifying Georgia’s role as a key maritime hub in the region. Particular focus was placed on the education and certification system for Georgian seafarers.
Dominguez praised Georgia’s recent achievements and reaffirmed the IMO’s readiness to continue supporting the country. The parties additionally discussed cooperation between UN and national maritime authorities, along with future prospects for strengthening and modernising Georgia’s maritime sector.
