Speaking at the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Dutch MEP Reinier van Lanschot asked EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, about measures to support Georgian democrats.
In response, Marta Kos expressed her intention to prioritize Georgia on the EU agenda.
“Me personally would love to put Georgia higher on the agenda,” she remarked.
Lanschot also noted that the return of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to the White House is putting Europe’s security concerns to the test in Georgia.
“The first test of Europe’s ability to take care of its own security is happening in Georgia. For months now, the Georgian people have mobilized in unprecedented numbers to protest against the regime that is embracing Russia against the will of its people because Georgia has a huge majority of pro-Europeans.
I heard them myself in Tbilisi last month. So they’re asking for our support and we should give it. I hope that Georgia can be higher on your list of priorities. While the United States has imposed sanctions on oligarch Ivanishvili, the council has only been drafting plans to revoke diplomatic passports for Georgian officials, and that’s completely insufficient. So my questions are, what will you do to impose sanctions? Do you support the call for new independent elections as the parliament has called for in its last resolution? And what other measures will you take to help Georgian Democrats,” Reinier van Lanschot stated.
