At an Independence Day celebration hosted by the Georgian Embassy in Hungary, János Bóka, Hungary’s Minister for EU Affairs, delivered a speech underscoring Hungary’s steadfast support for Georgia’s European integration and shared values of sovereignty and independence.
“Hungary supports Georgia’s EU accession process, not only politically, but also through technical assistance and training programs,” Bóka stated. “We have the privilege of being your voice within the European Union when others attempt to exclude or silence you.”
Bóka highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries, emphasizing a shared understanding of the importance of independence. “Both our nations know the importance of sovereignty and independence — they don’t come easily, and they don’t come for free,” he said.
Extending greetings from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian government, the minister celebrated the growing ties between Georgia and Hungary. He noted that since the first intergovernmental summit in October 2023, the two countries have developed a strategic partnership covering all areas of government and society.
Bóka also pointed to tangible developments in bilateral relations, including a trade increase of over threefold since 2010, a new investment protection agreement entering into force this year, and more than 130 Georgian students currently studying in Hungary through the Stipendium Hungaricum program.
Reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to Georgia’s EU aspirations, Bóka declared: “We stand with you on good and bad days alike. We are proud nations, and we want to remain what we are. We are both Europeans—not because anyone else approved it, but because this has been true for more than a thousand years.”
Describing Hungary and Georgia as “two islands of freedom in an ocean of old and new empires,” Bóka spoke of a shared vision for the future. “We have been building bridges and a future for our children and grandchildren,” he said.
He concluded with warm wishes for Georgia’s continued peace, prosperity, and an ever-deepening partnership: “May the beautiful, ancient, and proud nation of Georgia thrive, and may our partnership grow stronger each year.”
