“The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has approved a € 1.3 million grant to support the green hydrogen in Georgia,” - the German Embassy in Georgia reports.
According to the Embassy, the grant for technical assistance was approved to support the introduction of green hydrogen technology, develop a favorable legal framework and to deal with the issues related to the overall energy security of Georgia.
The Embassy notes that the German Federal Government, through the German Bank for Reconstruction and Development (KfW) and in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia and the Georgian Energy Development Fund (GEDF), will support the development of a green hydrogen market in Georgia.
A few months ago, the Georgian government and KfW officials reached an agreement in a Declaration of Intent for the Promotion of Green Hydrogen in Georgia, which involves development of a first reference project along the green hydrogen value chain.
“Georgia will be the first country in the region to develop hydrogen technologies; this will be a further step towards promoting energy independence and help to move the energy market to a sustainable low-carbon energy supply,” - Giorgi Chikovani, the Director of the GEDF, said.
Hubert Knirsch, the German Ambassador, called the project an “important step” in the diversification of the country’s energy sector and energy security amid the Ukraine war.
