German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, expressed serious concerns about Georgia’s recent political direction, stating that “since the beginning of 2024, Georgia has been moving away from the European Union.” He emphasized that the Georgian authorities appear to be distancing themselves “at great speed in all the fundamental areas.”
Fischer described the current state of relations between Georgia and both the EU and Germany as being in “a deep crisis,” adding, “I’m not sure there’s a way out. The key to the way out is in Georgia, only in Georgia. We have been good, reliable partners to Georgia since your independence.”
He also warned that cooperation depends on mutual commitment: “We would like to continue, but only if Georgia wants to be a good partner to us as well.” Regarding visa-free travel to the EU, Fischer underlined that such privileges “depend on certain conditions,” and that the European Commission has asked Georgia whether those conditions are still being met. “We will see what the response is of the Georgian authorities,” he said, “and we will take the necessary step.”
