In the first quarter of 2023, the trade turnover between Georgia and Ukraine decreased. According to official statistics, during the war, the export and import between the countries decreased by 35.1% compared to the first quarter of last year, while the trade turnover amounted to $84.2 million.
It should be noted that after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the trade turnover is characterized by a decreasing trend, although the decrease was 7.4% in this period last year.
In the first quarter of 2023, exports accounted for almost a quarter of trade between Georgia and Ukraine. In January-March of this year, the country earned $22 million 563 thousand from the sale of goods in Ukraine, which is 54.3% less than in the first quarter of 2022.
As for the TOP-10 commodity groups that have been exported to Ukraine this year are as follows:
1. Non-denatured ethanol - $6.5 million, 2 493 tons;
2. Light vehicles - $3.3 million;
3. Natural grape wines - $3.1 million, 1,083 tons;
4. Oil and oil products - $1.9 million, 1,024 tons;
5. Other vegetables, fresh or frozen - $1.4 million, 1 262 tons;
6. Copper waste and scrap-iron - $1.2 million, 154 tons;
7. Nuts and walnuts - $882 thousand dollars, 178 tons;
8. Ethylene polymers, in primary forms - $676 thousand, 571 tons;
9. Electric generating units and rotary electric transformers - $482 thousand, 54 tons;
10. Ginger, saffron, thyme, bay leaf, curry - $404 thousand, 179 tons.
Import took the main place in the trade turnover of the countries and 73.2% of the trade included the purchase of goods from Ukraine. In January-March, 61.6 million US dollars [23.2%-decrease] were sent from Georgia to Ukraine for the purchase of various types of goods. The largest group of goods imported from this direction was light vehicles.
By value, the ranking of TOP-10 imported goods is as follows:
1. Light vehicles - $12 million;
2. Oilcake and other solid waste - $3 million, 5,005 tons;
3. Corks, lids and roofs - $2.1 million, 178 tons;
4. Chocolate and other ready-made food products containing cocoa - $2 million, 545 tons;
5. Bread, cakes - $2 million, 737 tons;
6. Medicinal products packaged - $1.5 million, 81 tons;
7. Milk and cream, thickened or with added sugar - $1.5 million, 536 tons;
8. Roasted or unroasted malt - $1.4 million, 1 878 tons;
9. Sugar confectionery - $1.2 million, 591 tons;
10. Meat and food by-products made of domestic poultry - $1.2 million, 946 tons.
