In January-February 2025, Georgia imported electricity worth nearly $20 million, a significant increase compared to $1.6 million in the same period of 2024. This surge is primarily due to Georgia purchasing electricity for domestic use, as opposed to the previous year when electricity imports were limited to supplying Abkhazia, which receives power from Russia at a reduced price.
In 2024, Georgia’s total electricity imports amounted to $23.5 million, averaging 1.9 cents per kWh. However, the special low rate of 0.1 cents per kWh for Abkhazia greatly impacted this average.
This year, Azerbaijan and Armenia became the primary suppliers of electricity, accounting for over $19 million in imports, while only $400,000 worth of electricity was purchased from Russia. The shift in suppliers likely influenced the price, but the exact cost per kWh will be determined once the import volume data is released.
