The intangible cultural heritage element “Georgian Wheat Culture: Traditions and Rituals” has been granted the status of national significance under Resolution No. 98 of the Government of Georgia, dated March 27, 2024.
On the following day, March 28, 2024, Georgia officially submitted the nomination of this cultural element to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The nomination has successfully passed the first stage of evaluation.
Upon completion of the second stage — the substantive assessment — UNESCO issued a positive conclusion, emphasizing that the inclusion of Georgian Wheat Culture in the Representative List would enhance global awareness of the country’s rich agricultural traditions and cultural practices surrounding wheat. The organization highlighted that this element contributes to food security, gender equality, inclusive economic development, environmental sustainability, and the strengthening of peace and social cohesion.
The final decision on the nomination will be made during the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, to be held in Delhi, India, from 8 to 13 December 2025.
The Ministry of Culture of Georgia extends its gratitude to Vice-Speaker of Parliament Nino Tsilosani, the Parliament’s Committee on Agrarian Issues, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, and all those who contributed to the preparation of the nomination.
