Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili delivered strong criticism of the European Union, accusing Brussels of practicing what he called “kindergarten-level diplomacy” and ignoring Georgia’s progress and geographical realities.
“We are currently pursuing a policy of strategic patience with Brussels. We must wait and see. They have a foreign policy that is reminiscent of kindergarten-level diplomacy,” Papuashvili said.
He argued that the EU not only undermines Georgia’s economic development but also refuses to recognise its geographic and strategic importance.
“Unfortunately, Brussels continues to show a foreign policy that is, at best, immature. Their recent decisions reveal a refusal to acknowledge Georgia’s clear progress in economic, democratic, and institutional reforms — and even a disregard for basic geography,” he added.
Papuashvili also questioned why EU institutions dismiss international evaluations from organisations like the World Bank, suggesting that this reflects poorly on Brussels rather than on Georgia.
“When geography is ignored in foreign policy, it says more about them than us. This kind of approach damages the EU’s own reputation. Even major nations are beginning to question Brussels’ direction,” he said, referencing Estonia’s past position and its current Prime Minister, now the EU’s Foreign Commissioner.
The remarks come amid growing tensions between Tbilisi and Brussels over Georgia’s political trajectory and its relationship with the EU.
