In the October 26 parliamentary elections, the Georgian people reaffirmed the decision made in the March 31, 1991, referendum, which solidified their commitment to preserving Georgia's state independence. This was highlighted by Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili in a social media post.
Papuashvili underscored that independence is a continuous effort and not a finished task.
"On March 31, 1991, the Georgian people answered a single referendum question—'Do you agree to restore Georgia’s state independence?'—with a resounding ‘yes.’ Based on this mandate, Zviad Gamsakhurdia declared independence just nine days later. Today also marks the 86th birthday of Georgia’s first president, who would have turned 86."
"Seventy years after Soviet rule, the nation made a decisive and unwavering choice for sovereignty and self-determination. Over the past 34 years, Georgia has worked tirelessly to solidify this independence, overcoming many challenges. But this struggle is ongoing, and it will never cease."
"Every generation must protect and strengthen the state. We must be fully aware of the choices we make, the legacy we uphold, and our place in history."
Papuashvili emphasized that on March 31, 1991, the Georgian people rejected Soviet rule—not in favor of a new master, but in pursuit of true independence and national identity. This choice came at a significant cost, and the Speaker stressed that no one has the right to undermine or endanger Georgia's hard-won achievements.
"Independence cannot be traded for new forms of subjugation, foreign influence, or external interests. We must stand on our own—the power belongs to the people. The Georgian people made their choice on March 31, 1991, and they reaffirmed it on October 26, 2024, when our opponents turned the election into a referendum on independence."
Papuashvili acknowledged that Soviet rule had shaped the mentalities of many, leaving some still seeking external protection or assurances. However, he declared, "We do not need guardians—we need to take responsibility for our own future. We have grown up."
"The Georgian people, alongside their government, will determine their own destiny, choose their own allies and adversaries, and chart their own course."
"This day belongs to all those who choose independence and sovereignty—those who assert that we will govern ourselves, not be governed," Papuashvili concluded.
