The Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili is scheduled to address the European Parliament on December 18 at 11:30 a.m. Tbilisi time, according to a press release from the European Parliament.
The release highlights that Zourabichvili has been a prominent critic of the ruling Georgian Dream party in recent years.
The press statement further notes that Georgia has recently witnessed significant protests following the government’s decision to halt the country's EU accession process, a move that followed the contentious parliamentary elections of October 2024. President Zourabichvili, who has held office since 2018, characterized the election, in which the Georgian Dream party claimed victory, as fraudulent and effectively stolen. In response, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) adopted a resolution on November 28, 2024, rejecting the election results and calling for a re-election within the next year.
Zourabichvili’s presidential term is set to conclude on December 29, with Mikheil Kavelashvili, appointed by the newly elected Georgian parliament, designated as her successor. A former Georgian foreign minister and a French national, Zourabichvili has also served as France's ambassador to Georgia. In recent years, she has been a vocal and staunch critic of the Georgian Dream party.
