The President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili has awarded Prince D. Raimondo Umberto Maria Orsini d'Aragona (posthumously) with the Medal of Honor.
According to the press service of the President, Salome Zourabichvili awarded the Prince for his special contribution to the strengthening of relations between Georgia and the Holy See and for his many charitable activities in Georgia.
The President presented the Georgian State Award to his wife, the Ambassador of Georgia to the Holy See, Ketevan Bagrationi–Mukhranbatoni, and their children, Lelio, Louisa and Dorothea Orsini, during a working visit to the Vatican.
"The loss of Prince Raimondo Orsini is a great pain for both Georgia and Italy. This man represented the unity of the two nations.
This was a man who, during the most difficult period in the history of Georgia, started a charitable activity for the benefit of Georgia and every Georgian and did not stop it until the last minute of his life.
He was the founder of one of the first charitable and cultural organizations "St. George's Shield" in Rome. Those children still remember the help and support that Prince Orsini gave them as cancer patients.
Prince Raimondo Orsini made a great contribution and strengthened the relations between Georgia and the Holy See. For this and many other honorable and worthy reasons, I will hand over his order to his wife and children," - said the President of Georgia.
The Ambassador of Georgia to the Holy See Ketevan Bagrationi-Mukhranbatoni thanked the President of Georgia for appreciating the work of his spouse and noted that her family had been strengthening these relations between the countries for 30 years.
The award ceremony was held in Italy on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Holy See.
