As Georgia prepares for local elections on October 4, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has published an opinion piece in Euronews defending his government’s track record and reaffirming Georgia’s unwavering commitment to European integration.
In the article, Kobakhidze described the upcoming elections as “a testament to the Georgian people’s trust in democratic institutions and their enduring aspiration to live in a stable and modern state.”
He cited his ruling Georgian Dream party’s 54% share in recent parliamentary elections as evidence of public confidence, while criticising opposition forces for seeking to “turn the democratic process into a tool for destabilisation.”
Economic Growth and Regional Role
Kobakhidze highlighted Georgia’s economic performance, claiming the country has become “one of the fastest-growing economies in the wider European neighbourhood” over the past four years.
Positioning Georgia as a key player in regional logistics, he emphasised the country’s strategic role in the Middle Corridor, which connects European and Asian markets.
“In an era when Europe seeks strategic autonomy, energy diversification, and enhanced connectivity, Georgia is a central solution, not a peripheral player,” he wrote.
The Prime Minister also pointed to major infrastructure investments, notably the planned Anaklia Deep Sea Port, which he said would become “the most modern on the Black Sea.”
Steadfast on EU Integration
On foreign policy, Kobakhidze firmly reiterated Georgia’s European course, stating: “Our path toward EU membership remains steady and irreversible.” He described the government’s 2030 EU accession goal as “realistic and attainable—not just because we aspire to it, but because we are doing the work to deserve it.”
Kobakhidze expressed optimism that Georgia’s efforts would be fairly assessed in the coming years, calling for a “more merit-based” approach from the EU in evaluating Georgia’s progress.
He acknowledged the continuing challenges posed by Russia, stating that “20% of our territory remains under Russian occupation.” Despite this, he stressed that Georgia remains committed to peace and reform.
Closing Message
Concluding the op-ed, the Prime Minister wrote: “Georgia’s path is European, peaceful, and principled. We are doing our part. We remain steadfast in reform, committed to our obligations, and focused on delivering results.”
