Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze held a meeting with U.S. Senator Steve Daines, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to discuss the future of U.S.-Georgia relations, Georgia’s regional role, and the country’s political landscape.
According to the Georgian government, Prime Minister Kobakhidze reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to “reset” ties with the United States and renew the strategic partnership between the two countries.
“I reiterated the Georgian government’s commitment to resetting relations with the United States and renewing our strategic partnership, which will be based on clear, concrete guidelines and aimed at delivering tangible benefits for both nations,” the Prime Minister shared on social media. He emphasized Georgia’s role in fostering peace and stability in the region, its strategic transit potential, and its access to major global markets. Kobakhidze also addressed Georgia’s domestic political environment, asserting that “political stability is maintained, with the government serving as its guarantor.”
Senator Daines echoed the importance of strong bilateral ties. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Kobakhidze and emphasized Georgia’s critical role in promoting peace and prosperity in the Caucasus and beyond.
The post further stated that the senator encouraged Georgia to “work closely with President Trump and his Administration to advance our mutual economic and security interests.”
High-ranking Georgian officials including First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Levan Davitashvili, Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, and Head of Government Administration Levan Zhorzholiani also participated in the meeting.
Former Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, now aligned with the opposition’s Resistance Platform, also met separately with Senator Daines. In her statement, she noted the significance of the senator’s engagement with the opposition.
“He met only with us – the opposition, which is highly significant,” Zourabichvili said. “He listened carefully to our concerns about internal issues, legal violations, and the broader strategic challenges facing Georgia and the region.”
The U.S. Embassy in Georgia confirmed Senator Daines' arrival in Tbilisi and said his visit includes meetings with both government and political party representatives. The Embassy added that the senator plans to convey the priorities of President Trump and Senator Marco Rubio, particularly those aligned with the “America First” agenda and steps Georgia can take to demonstrate its commitment to improving relations with the United States.
