Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze engaged in a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, on the sidelines of the European Political Community (EPC) Summit.
According to the government administration, the discussion centred on the ongoing cooperation between Georgia and the Council of Europe, as well as the resolutions adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
“We covered all relevant topics during the meeting, including matters concerning the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. As you are aware, we suspended our activities in the Assembly following the adoption of a specific resolution. Nevertheless, we reiterated our full willingness to cooperate with the Council of Europe, including the Parliamentary Assembly, provided that such cooperation is founded on clear principles. I also took the opportunity to thank Mr Berset for his involvement in matters related to our country and expressed hope that these relations will continue constructively and healthily,” said Irakli Kobakhidze.
In a post on social media platform X, Georgia’s Prime Minister reflected that he has again “reaffirmed Georgia’s unwavering commitment to the development of democracy.”
“In the framework of the European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen, I held productive discussions with H.E. Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. I reaffirmed Georgia’s strong commitment to advancing democracy and stressed the importance of close cooperation with the CoE in supporting reforms on our path to European integration,” the Prime Minister stated.
On his part, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, stressed that “our dialogue with Georgia is essential.”
“Commitment to the European Court of Human Rights is high, and so are the expectations for Georgia as for every member state. Our dialogue with Georgia is essential. At the EPC in Copenhagen, I spoke with Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, on how the Council of Europe supports democratic stability and security for the Georgian people,” Alain Berset posted on social media.
The meeting was attended by Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Botchorishvili, and the Head of the Government Administration, Levan Zhorzholiani.
