Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has announced a proposed shift to a “3+1” higher education model in Georgia, under which bachelor’s degrees would be completed in three years and master’s degrees in one year, with exceptions for specialised fields such as medicine.
The announcement was made during the presentation of a broader government education reform initiative. Kobakhidze stressed the need for clearly defined objectives at both academic levels and criticised the existing system for lacking analytical grounding in program duration.
He also revealed that the government is considering a transition to an 11-year school curriculum in some schools, with the Ministry of Education already working on the proposal.
The Prime Minister further pointed to significant flaws in the quality management system of higher education, describing it as formalistic and ineffective, and called for urgent reform to ensure proper state oversight and improved educational standards.
