The Georgian parliamentary delegation held a meeting today with the Speaker of the Indian Parliament, followed by a working lunch with India’s Minister of External Affairs. Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee and a delegation member, described the visit as one of Georgia’s high-level engagements with India.
Samkharadze highlighted the rapid progress in bilateral relations in recent years.
“Relations have been developing dynamically, as seen in India’s decision to open a full-fledged embassy in Tbilisi. The embassy has now been formally established, and we are awaiting the appointment of an ambassador,” he said.
Discussions during the visit focused on strengthening economic cooperation, current geopolitical developments, and international security.
“Our positions align on key principles of international law, which provides a strong foundation for further deepening our relationship. India, as the world’s most populous country, continues to increase its political and economic influence. Its economic growth in recent years has been remarkable, with significant potential for further expansion,” Samkharadze noted.
He also emphasized the need to boost trade between Georgia and India.
“Current trade turnover stands at 200 million GEL, which is not sufficient. We shared information with our Indian colleagues on developments in the occupied territories and the security situation in the Black Sea region. The meetings were productive and meaningful, and we hope this visit will further energize Georgian-Indian relations,” he added.
