The Georgian Parliament will officially open its autumn session tomorrow, September 2.
As outlined by parliamentary regulations, the autumn session begins on the first Tuesday of September and concludes on the third Friday of December.
The opening week is expected to be particularly busy:
-
Today, the Committee on Procedural Issues will review the resignation of Anri Okhanashvili from his role as Head of the State Security Service. The decision will then move to the plenary session for further action.
-
Parliament is also set to elect a new head for the State Security Service. The ruling majority has nominated Mamuka Mdinaradze for the post. His confirmation will require support from at least 76 MPs. Mdinaradze is scheduled to appear before the Defense and Security Committee for a hearing.
-
Another significant item on the agenda is the potential termination of parliamentary mandates for members of the opposition party "Gakharia for Georgia." The Procedural Issues Committee will discuss the issue today, with a final decision to be made in the plenary session.
These developments mark the beginning of what is expected to be a politically active and potentially contentious session in the Georgian legislature.
