Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, stressed the importance of ensuring that the voices of European partners are increasingly heard in the European Parliament, particularly those advocating for the preservation of European identity and the upholding of the EU’s core values.
However, Papuashvili warned that regressive forces within the European Union remain strong, pushing it toward a darker chapter in Europe’s history.
“This was starkly evident during yesterday’s debates in the European Parliament,” he said. “We witnessed a disturbing drift towards a civilisational abyss, driven by bureaucratic arrogance. The session reflected elements rooted in Europe’s darker past: contempt, a sense of superiority, propaganda, and disinformation, all voiced from the Parliament’s rostrum.”
Papuashvili further highlighted the disappointment felt by both EU citizens and the Georgian people, who aspire to join the Union and see themselves as active contributors to European civilisation and values.
“First, it is the citizens of the European Union who are most disappointed, witnessing their institutions diverge from the will of the European peoples and serving instead geopolitical agendas dictated by unofficial powers,” he said.
“Second, it is a profound disappointment for the Georgian people, who aspire to EU membership and pride themselves on contributing to European values. We see Brussels dismantling European civilisation before our eyes, a concern now even echoed by the United States, Europe’s key security guarantor,” Papuashvili concluded.
