On April 9, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, took to social media to reflect on the significance of this historic day, marking both the tragedy of 1989 and the joy of Georgia's restored independence. In his post, Papuashvili emphasized the importance of transparency, determination, and respect for the legacy of those who fought for Georgia's sovereignty.
"Step by step, through open discussion and transparency, we are showing every citizen where the truth lies and where hypocrisy stands," Papuashvili wrote. "We know that the people see our truth, our effort, and our determination to protect, preserve, and strengthen the achievements of previous generations."
April 9 is not only a day to mourn the tragic loss of life during the 1989 crackdown but also a day to celebrate Georgia’s state independence, which was formally declared on this date in 1991. Papuashvili underlined that Georgia’s national movement, which linked the independence of the First Republic with the modern struggle for sovereignty, remains central to the nation's identity.
He noted, "The tragedy of April 9, 1989, was first and foremost a terrible loss — marked by the death, injury, and terror inflicted on dozens of innocent people." The Speaker also reflected on the lasting impact of this day, recalling how President Zviad Gamsakhurdia chose April 9 to immortalize the national movement and its enduring fight for statehood.
In his statement, Papuashvili reminded the public that the responsibility of the government is to honor the mandate it has received, emphasizing the duty to both preserve the country’s independence and continue the work of previous generations. "We no longer have the luxury of failure," he said. "We do not have the right to weakness or complacency."
Papuashvili closed with a call for unity, stressing that the government's role is to strengthen the state and unite society, working toward a future guided by wisdom, intelligence, and courage. "Every step we take is directed toward strengthening the state and uniting society," he wrote. "Today is April 9 — a day of pain and joy. Today is the Day of the Restoration of Georgia’s Independence."
