The Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has praised former U.S. President Donald Trump’s congratulatory message to President Kavelashvili, calling it a “commendable” gesture that highlights two key priorities:
“The importance of strong U.S.-Georgia governmental cooperation and enhanced economic collaboration.”
However, Papuashvili expressed surprise and concern over the U.S. Embassy's decision not to publish the letter, noting that such a message aligns closely with Georgia’s long-standing strategic goals:
“We had expected the strategic partnership to support closer economic ties, increased investment, and progress toward a free trade agreement, including favorable tariff conditions. President Trump’s message clearly echoed these priorities, which we have long advocated.”
He went on to criticize the embassy’s communication approach, suggesting that the lack of transparency undermines a positive diplomatic exchange:
“Instead of publishing President Trump’s congratulatory message, the embassy posted an unclear statement related to the Georgian Dream party. This creates the impression that there was an attempt to downplay the President’s positive message.”
Papuashvili contrasted this with previous practices, citing the prompt release of Georgian translations of other high-level U.S. statements, such as a recent congressional address by the Secretary of State.
“Since the embassy represents the U.S. President, some explanation is likely needed,” he added.
