Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, criticized the conduct of Germany’s ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, saying he has acted as an obstacle rather than a bridge between the two countries.
“Yesterday, we saw the statement. It seems the German government has at least acknowledged that their ambassador is not helping strengthen ties between our countries. This is unfortunate,” Papuashvili said, referring to Germany’s decision to summon Ambassador Fischer for consultations.
Asked about the German Foreign Ministry’s move, Papuashvili pointed to what he called a pattern of attacks on the Georgian government and support for radical groups, saying such actions have harmed a once-strong partnership.
“Our 30-year special relationship with Germany has hit a low under this ambassador. We hope this latest development signals a willingness to reset the relationship. We’re ready to restore it to the level it deserves,” he stated.
Papuashvili emphasized that Georgian officials have repeatedly voiced their concerns about the ambassador’s conduct and that their criticisms are backed by clear arguments and public observation.
“The ambassador should be a bridge, not a wall. All ambassadors should respect their diplomatic roles and work to strengthen ties, not undermine them,” he added. “We hope the German government reconsiders the situation and acts in a way that benefits both countries.”
