Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, criticized Brussels for moving away from the fundamental values of European cooperation, accusing it of adopting a confrontational approach toward Georgia.
“Today, Brussels has drifted away from the core principles that underpin European cooperation. This shift has resulted in attacks, confrontational rhetoric, and directives aimed at the Georgian people,” Papuashvili said.
He added that, instead of engaging in dialogue, Brussels appears to favor confrontation. “The spokesperson confirmed that Brussels itself halted the process in June 2024 and admitted to spreading disinformation, suggesting that the Georgian government had abandoned its path toward integration. This is yet another confirmation that Brussels has chosen confrontation over dialogue, departing from European values.”
Papuashvili emphasized that true European principles are about dialogue, understanding different perspectives, and respecting sovereignty, rather than issuing directives. “Unfortunately, today Brussels has strayed from these core values, which is reflected in the tone and attacks directed at the Georgian people,” he said.
He further argued that the main problem in relations with Brussels is a disagreement over fundamental principles, including respect for national and democratic sovereignty, the rule of law, and human rights. “Brussels has failed to recognize the Georgian people’s sovereignty to choose their government, their right to draft and implement legislation, and the basic principles that define European values,” Papuashvili said.
Concluding his statement, he accused Brussels of taking a “guardianship approach” toward Georgia instead of allowing the country to determine its own laws and governance.
