Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has sharply criticized Brussels for what he describes as ongoing political interference in Georgia's justice system. In a social media post, Papuashvili expressed concern that EU institutions continue to ignore historical lessons and fail to uphold true European values.
“Brussels must cease its political interference in the justice system; regrettably, it continues to disregard the lessons of history,” Papuashvili wrote.
He argued that if EU politicians and bureaucrats were genuinely committed to European values, they would have publicly apologized to the Georgian people after each European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision that revealed politically motivated legal actions.
“Brussels needs to stop justifying politically motivated crimes and interference in justice,” he stated. “Unfortunately, it continues to ignore the past, despite the Strasbourg Court’s repeated exposure of injustices in cases involving Saakashvili, Melia, Gvaramia, Rustavi 2, and others.”
Papuashvili concluded by accusing EU officials of attacking the Georgian state and perpetuating a harmful political cycle rather than acknowledging past missteps.
