On April 15, the legislative body is set to deliberate on the proposed Grants Law, which would mandate prior government approval for receiving foreign grants. According to reports, accepting a grant without this consent could result in fines.
Under the proposal, the government would have ten days to approve or deny grant applications. Notably, if the decision is appealed, the original ruling would remain in effect during the appeals process.
The draft law includes exceptions for grants related to sports, education, and science, as well as for international organizations already operating in Georgia.
Opposition parties argue that the law is a superficial reform aimed at restricting the activities of non-governmental organizations. The draft is expected to be fast-tracked through the legislative process.
