Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, has sent an open letter to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, expressing strong concern over what he described as the body’s deviation from its founding principles and the goals of the Eastern Partnership’s Prague Declaration.
Makhashvili criticised certain Members of the European Parliament for their “hostile rhetoric” and “politically biased actions” toward Georgia, accusing them of supporting local opposition figures “charged with criminal offences” and of overstepping diplomatic norms by participating in protest rallies in Tbilisi. He also condemned Euronest’s decision to invite individuals presented as “civil society representatives” who, he claimed, had backed anti-government and anti-democratic actions.
According to Makhashvili, such decisions risk legitimising radical agendas and undermining the Assembly’s credibility as a forum for democratic dialogue. He further noted that the absence of most partner countries from Euronest meetings reflects deep flaws in the European Parliament’s current approach.
Citing these concerns, Makhashvili confirmed that Georgia’s parliamentary delegation abstained from attending the 12th Euronest session in Yerevan, urging the Assembly’s leadership to “recommit to its founding principles” and restore genuine cooperation among Eastern Partnership nations.
