Today, the Orthodox Church marks the Day of the Translation of the Holy Relics of St. Nicholas. On this occasion, festive divine services are being held in churches.
The transfer of the holy relics of the great hierarch from Myra of Lycia to the Italian city of Bari took place in 1087, seven centuries after his repose. St. Nicholas performed many miracles during his lifetime, and miracles continue to be attributed to his holy relics, which rest in the Church of St. Nicholas in Bari. For this reason, Orthodox Christians turn to the holy hierarch for intercession and help in times of need.
St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is regarded as the patron saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church, following the prayer of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, who entrusted the Georgian Church to his protection.
The Church commemorates St. Nicholas the Wonderworker twice each year. His day of repose is observed on December 19.
