"I am honored to participate in the meeting of the parties to the Aarhus Convention on behalf of Georgia. In addition to discussing the environmental issues, we have the opportunity to mark the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Aarhus Convention. We have made progress through our joint activities. We must continue to strengthen environmental democracy, both nationally and internationally,” - Georgian Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili, said.
As the Minister noted, the Geneva Declaration is a policy-oriented document and its main message is the role of the Aarhus Convention and its Protocol in promoting sustainable, inclusive and sustainable development.
The session was attended by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Nino Tandilashvili and the Head of the Georgian Mission to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations Alexandre Maisuradze.
The meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention was twice chaired by Maia Bitadze, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources of the Parliament of Georgia, who is also the Chairperson of the Bureau of the Aarhus Convention.
It should be noted that the 7-year cycle of the presidency of Georgia ended with the most important decision, which involves the establishment of the first new institution within the UN; This is a rapid response mechanism, the so-called rapporteur, which will be responsible for the rapid response of stakeholders to issues raised in the Aarhus Convention.
