According to the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili, the Government of Georgia has reached an agreement with the Poti Port Operator Company APM Terminals on the conditions for the construction of a new terminal. The Minister does not specify what the agreement is about, but says that now it is the investor's turn to start the port expansion project.
The negotiations between the government of APM Terminals and the international law firm hired by the government have been going on for several years. Despite the statement of the Minister of Economy, it is not known whether the stage of negotiations has officially ended or not. The project envisages an investment of up to $200 million.
"We have regular communication with APM Terminals and have actually agreed on all the terms; I think that these details that were in the interest of the Port of Poti have actually been decided in their favor. So I think there is nothing interfering with the state here. It is the investor's decision how much to invest," said Levan Davitashvili.
The port expansion project itself is considered in the 2021 governance report for APM Terminals. According to the document, the new berth will have the following parameters:
"The project includes the construction of an additional 1,800-meter breakwater, a 400-meter coastal berth and a 25-hectare warehouse area with modern work equipment and superstructures. The port expansion project is aimed at both dry bulk cargo and container shipping and will allow the port to serve 250 m. total length and 13.5 m. deep vessels with draught. This enables the port to offer improved customer propositions to handle larger capacity vessels and ensure faster turnover,” - the document said.
The Poti Port Operator Company APM Terminals received a GEL 187 million revenue and a net profit of GEL 83 million in 2021.
