At a joint press conference with Elina Valtonen, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Finnish Foreign Minister, Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili emphasized the significance of Valtonen’s planned visit to the occupation line.
“It is extremely important to us that Finland’s Foreign Minister, as representative of the OSCE Chairperson country, visit the occupation line and see the situation there for herself,” Botchorishvili stated.
She stressed that such a visit offers a vital opportunity to gain a clear and direct understanding of the ongoing security challenges Georgia faces.
Botchorishvili also noted Finland's broader role as a member of the European Union, which contributes to the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia—a mission that includes Finnish personnel.
“We are extremely grateful for the presence of this mission in Georgia. Currently, it is the only international mechanism monitoring developments on the ground. The EU Monitoring Mission not only provides accompaniment but also plays a critical role as an observer organisation, helping to document and report on the situation along Georgia’s occupation line,” she said.
The Georgian Foreign Minister added that the two officials had in-depth discussions on the Russia-Georgia conflict, possible paths toward resolution, the consequences of the occupation, and its ongoing humanitarian impact.
“The Minister will have the opportunity to see this at the occupation line tomorrow,” Botchorishvili concluded.
