Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili responded to recent comments by European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, criticizing what she described as inconsistent messaging from the European Union regarding Georgia’s EU accession process.
Botchorishvili argued that Georgia is being unfairly blamed for stalling a process that has not formally begun:
“First, the Georgian government was accused of halting a process that had not even started, and now we hear we are being punished for it.”
She stressed that Georgia was granted candidate status after a long wait, but unlike Ukraine and Moldova, no accession negotiations were initiated. She added that the shift in EU narrative appears politically motivated:
“When it became clear they were losing control of the process, the blame shifted onto the Georgian government.”
Botchorishvili clarified that Georgia is not demanding negotiations at this stage but opposes being used as a political example:
“We don’t want this tool to be used against us. We’re not asking for negotiations until a proper decision is made.”
