Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili has accused former President Salome Zurabishvili of deliberately obstructing the appointment of ambassadors, leaving many of Georgia’s diplomatic missions unstaffed. Speaking on "Current Topics with Maka Tsintsadze", Bochorishvili said that due to Zurabishvili’s actions and inaction, Georgia lacked ambassadorial representation in numerous countries.
Since the new president took office, around 30 ambassadors have been appointed, effectively rebuilding Georgia’s diplomatic presence “from scratch,” she noted. Bochorishvili emphasized that the absence of ambassadors made it harder to defend Georgia’s interests abroad, particularly amid what she described as the European Union’s growing reluctance to engage directly with the Georgian government.
She also criticized the EU’s June 2024 decision to limit dialogue with the Georgian government, calling it a factor that further complicates Georgia’s international representation.
