“The First Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Romeo Mikautadze, reviewed the ongoing reforms and projects in the energy sector at the meeting of the European Integration Committee of the Parliament,” - the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia reports.
Romeo Mikautadze focused on such important issues as the new support scheme for the production and use of renewable energies and capacity auctions, strengthening of the energy infrastructure, ongoing legislative changes in the direction of energy efficiency and renewable energies, energy market reform and others. According to the First Deputy Minister, in 2017 Georgia made the most important decision in the process of integration with Europe and the development of the energy sector and joined the founding agreement of the Energy Community.
"The development of renewable energy sources is very important to increase and strengthen the energy security of Georgia. Since the majority of domestic electricity production focuses on renewable energy/hydropower production, the field of renewable energy is defined by our country as one of the priority areas of the sector. One of the goals of the energy policy is to increase the share of renewable energy in the total energy supply of the country," - said the First Deputy Minister.
According to Romeo Mikautadze, within the framework of the memorandum of cooperation signed in December 2020 between the Ministries of Economy and Sustainable Development and Education and Science, as well as the German Society for International Cooperation and the Georgian Energy Development Fund, training programs for installers of renewable energy devices were prepared for the following technologies: biomass stoves, solar photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems, surface geothermal systems and heat pumps. 34 installers were trained, and their list was approved by the government in accordance with the requirements of the Renewable Energy Law.
The First Deputy Minister paid special attention to the new renewable energy support scheme. According to him, 27 companies were announced as winners at the first 300 MW power auction. He also highlighted the strategic project of the Black Sea submarine cable. As Romeo Mikautadze said, if the Black Sea is connected to Georgia with an underwater cable, not only one country, but the entire South Caucasus region will potentially join the European energy system.
