The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Mikheil Chkhenkeli hosted the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Georgia, Kemlin Furley, at the Tbilisi Public School No. 41, where the Ukrainian-speaking sector was established by the decision of the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli and Kemlin Furley met with students and teachers and got acquainted with the current learning process in the Ukrainian-speaking sector.
The Minister briefed the Head of the UNHCR Office on the details of the projects implemented by the Government of Georgia in support of the Ukrainian children.
According to Mikheil Chkhenkeli, the team of the Ministry established the Ukrainian-speaking sector in the Tbilisi Public School No. 41 within exactly 2 weeks, where the teaching process is conducted in the Ukrainian language for the 1st-12th grades. Ukrainian students have access to general education with the same curriculum and textbooks as they used to study in Ukrainian schools. In addition, Ukrainian students will study the Georgian language and literature and the subject "My Georgia".
As the Minister noted, in close cooperation with the Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia has selected qualified teachers for the Ukrainian-speaking sector, whose salaries will be provided by the Government of Georgia.
During the meeting with the head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Georgia, Kemlin Furley, Mikheil Chkhenkeli also noted that according to the decision of the Georgian government, Ukrainian students are allowed to enroll in the Georgian schools in a simplified manner. As Mikheil Chkhenkeli said, up to 600 Ukrainian students are currently receiving education in various public and private schools, including the Ukrainian-speaking sector, throughout Georgia.
Kemlin Furley, the Head of the UNHCR Representation in Georgia, for her part, praised all the projects implemented by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia to support Ukrainian children. She said that it is really impressive to establish a Ukrainian-speaking sector in such a short time and to provide a safe environment for Ukrainian students. Kemlin Furley thanked the Government of Georgia and personally Minister Mikheil Chkhenkel for their work.
